Media Releases

The winner of this year's OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award is Mark Ryan, the finalists are Gerry McMahon and Warren Pickering.

The OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award allows local artists the opportunity to showcase the beauty of copper through their own artistic creation by providing materials and funding.

OZ Minerals Managing Director and CEO Andrew Cole said, “Copper is often only thought of as a material hidden in electronics. The Copper Sculpture Award shows how it can also be used to create amazing works of art and we continue to be awed by the quality of these sculptures. I wish Mark every success as he embarks on his copper sculpture.”

A traditional blacksmith by occupation, Mark participated in OZ Minerals' inaugural copper workshop to extend his practice into copper.

Mark has proposed to create a large scale copper sculpture of a leafy sea dragon, a unique marine creature endemic to South Australia. Mark will have until the start of the 2016 SALA Festival to complete his sculpture.

Last year's copper sculpture winner, Chris Ormerod, will exhibit his copper sculpture, ‘From the Hill' inside the main terminal of Adelaide Airport from 1 August as part of the 2015 SALA Festival.

About the OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award

The OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award provides an opportunity for South Australian based artists to work with copper to create an original artwork. The recipient of the OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award will have twelve months to create their artwork which will be exhibited as part of the South Australian Living Arts (SALA) Festival.

The Copper Sculpture Award is similar to a commission. South Australian artists are given the opportunity to submit a proposal of their idea and apply for financial assistance for copper and production costs. Artists are then able to sell their works after the SALA Festival.
