OZ Minerals Copper Workshop

01 July 2015

In response to artist's demands,OZ Minerals held a free two day copper workshop in Adelaide in November 2014 to teach artists how to work with copper.

Over two days, Chris Ormerod, this years' winner of the OZ Minerals' Copper Sculpture Award and Metal Fabrication lecturer at TAFE SA led the artists with the assistance of Antony Speer from OZ Minerals through copper sculpting techniques including plasma cutting and tig welding to create their first ever copper sculptures. This passionate group of twelve artists were unique in their artistic focus and expertise, with broad backgrounds encompassing jewellery, landscape architecture, street art, traditional blacksmithing and ceremic sculpture.

"South Australian visual artist Lorry Wedding-Marchioro working in the area of sculpture says 'The opportunity to work with new materials and meet other artists was a enjoyable experience.' (Pictured right)

Artists were thrilled with the opportunity and challenges of working with copper over the two days and were particularly appreciative with the assistance from Chris Ormerod, Antony Speer and TAFE Regency SA trainers.

‘With the success of the Copper Workshop, we encourage all artists who participated to apply for the next year's Copper Sculpture Award'

The OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award

The OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award provides an opportunity for South Australian-based artists to work with copper to create an original artwork. The recipient of the OZ Minerals Copper Sculpture Award has twelve months to create their artwork which will be exhibited as part of the South Australian Living Arts (SALA) Festival.

The Copper Sculpture Award is similar to a commission. South Australian artists are given the opportunity to submit a proposal of their idea and apply for financial assistance for copper and production costs. Artists are then able to sell their works after the SALA Festival.
